Weed Measurements Guide

Weed weights all hang off the ounce. A gram is 1/28 of it, an eighth is 3.5 g, a quarter is 7 g, a half is 14 g, and the ounce itself is 28 g. The pound is the only size above it, at 16 ounces. Once the ounce clicks, the rest is just division.

Below: what each size weighs, what it costs per gram, how many joints it makes, and what “zip” and “dime” actually mean.

Why Is an Ounce of Weed 28 Grams When a Real Ounce Is 28.35?

A true ounce is 28.35 g. Weed uses 28 so that an eighth comes out at a clean 3.5 g and a quarter at 7 g, instead of 3.54 and 7.09.

Pounds get messy for the same reason. 28 × 16 is 448 g, the exact ounce gives about 454 g, and you’ll see both numbers online. Neither is wrong. At the counter, the weight on the package is what you go by.

How Much Is a Gram of Weed?

One medium bud, or two small ones. That’s a couple of slim joints or a few bowls, and it’s how people find out whether a strain is worth buying more of. Not every shop sells single grams, so check before you plan around one.

How Much Is an Eighth of Weed?

3.5 grams, and the size the whole market is built around: Headset counted 10.2 million eighths sold in June 2026, more than any other package size. Dense flower gives you a few medium buds, or one big one about the size of a walnut.

Ours run $35 to $65 depending on the strain, with $53 typical. Whatever shop you’re in, compare by price per gram. Always.

How Much Is a Quarter of Weed?

7 grams, which is two eighths for a little less per gram. It’s where people drift once they’ve found a strain they like and got tired of reordering. Cooks use it too, since infusions go through flower fast. Highvendor quarters cost $66 to $123, typically around $100.

How Much Is a Half Ounce of Weed?

14 grams, enough to fill your palm. A daily smoker gets through it in a few weeks. Someone who only smokes on weekends won’t, at least not before it dries out. Here it’s $119 to $221, typically about $180.

How Much Is an Ounce of Weed?

28 grams, and in a lot of states the most you can buy at once. The name “zip” comes from the Ziploc bag.

Highvendor ounces run $210 to $390, typically $318. Biggest bill, lowest price per gram.

How Much Is a Pound of Weed?

Sixteen ounces, or roughly 454 grams. Don’t go looking for one at a dispensary. Pounds go wholesale. Quarter and half pounds (4 oz, about 113 g, and 8 oz, about 227 g) mostly turn up in extraction, when a single batch needs a ton of plant.

How Do You Convert Grams to Ounces?

Grams to ounces, you divide by 28. Going back, you multiply. Ten grams works out to a little over a third of an ounce, and three ounces is 84 g. Pounds? Divide by 454.

Price per gram works the same way. $53 for 3.5 grams? That’s about $15 a gram.

How Much Does Each Weed Measurement Cost?

The cheapest flower we list is a $35 eighth. The priciest is a $390 ounce. Buy an ounce instead of an eighth and every gram gets about a quarter cheaper. All 21 flower strains in the catalog are in the table (October 2026), with the range and the median.

SizePrice rangeTypical priceTypical price per gram
Eighth (3.5 g)$35 to $65$53$15.14
Quarter (7 g)$66 to $123$100$14.29
Half ounce (14 g)$119 to $221$180$12.86
Ounce (28 g)$210 to $390$318$11.36

Step up a size and the gram gets cheaper. Compared with an eighth, it’s about 6% off for a quarter, 15% for a half, 25% for an ounce. Count it in joints and a slim 0.5 g one costs roughly $7.57 from a typical eighth, $5.68 from a typical ounce. Prices move, so the product page beats this table.

Other things that move the price on any shelf:

  • State and taxes. Local excise taxes and market maturity set the baseline.
  • Quality tier. Budget and top-shelf can sit several times apart, even in one store.
  • Form of the flower. Smalls and shake are cheaper than whole buds with similar potency.

How Many Joints Can You Get From Each Size?

Depends on your joints. Call a slim one 0.5 g and a fat one 1 g:

SizeJoints at 0.5 gJoints at 1 g
Gram21
Eighth73 to 4
Quarter147
Half ounce2814
Ounce5628

Pipes and bongs are lighter on flower than people assume. Since one bowl is only 0.25 to 0.5 g, a single gram stretches to two, three, even four of them.

Think in days instead of grams. Half a gram a day makes an eighth last a week and a quarter two. A half ounce gets you through a month, an ounce nearly two.

What Do Weed Slang Terms Mean?

Shops talk grams now. The slang hangs on in forums and in people’s mouths, and there are really two kinds.

Dollar-based terms say what you paid, not what you got. Nickel bag: $5 worth. Dime: $10. Dub: $20. How much weed that bought was up to the seller and the decade, usually half a gram to two.

Weight-based terms map straight onto the chart:

  • Slice, eighth, 8th: 3.5 g
  • Quad, Q: a quarter ounce, 7 g
  • Halfie, half O, half zip: a half ounce, 14 g
  • Zip, O, OZ: one ounce, 28 g
  • QP: a quarter pound, 4 oz
  • HP: a half pound, 8 oz
  • Pack, elbow: a pound

Slang drifts by region. If you’re not sure what someone means, ask for the weight in grams.

How Much Weed Should You Buy?

New to a strain? A gram or an eighth. Enough to learn how it hits you, not enough to regret. Regulars settle on an eighth or a quarter, and buy an ounce only when they know exactly what they like.

The classic mistake is going big on the first order. A strain can smell great and still not suit you, and then you’re stuck with a month of it. Bulk is cheaper per gram, but flower loses aroma and potency as it ages, so an ounce only saves money if you finish it before it dries out.

How Can You Check That You Got the Right Weight?

Start with the label: licensed products print the net weight on the package. To double-check, a digital pocket scale that reads to 0.1 g costs next to nothing. Weigh the flower without the container, and don’t fuss over a tiny gap, since flower loses a little moisture as it sits. A sealed package that’s clearly short goes back to the seller.

What Are the Legal Purchase Limits?

It depends on the state. Many adult-use states cap a single purchase or possession at about one ounce of flower, some allow more, some less, and medical programs often have their own limits. Check yours before you order. NORML’s state-by-state law page is a decent place to start.
